Three full days covers the essentials: ancient Rome, the Vatican, and a slow wander through the historic center. Five days lets you add a neighborhood like Trastevere or Testaccio properly, rather than rushing through.
What to book ahead
The Colosseum and Vatican Museums both sell out on popular dates — book both before you land. Restaurants, on the other hand, mostly don't need reservations outside peak dinner hours.
Common first-timer mistakes
Trying to do the Colosseum, Forum and Vatican in one day. Wearing shorts to St Peter's Basilica (you'll be turned away). Not validating a paper metro ticket before boarding.
