Best light
Early morning light hits the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill particularly well, before the crowds arrive; golden hour from Gianicolo Hill is the classic wide-shot vantage point over the city.
Rules to know
Tripods are restricted or banned at many major sites, including inside the Vatican Museums; photography is prohibited entirely inside the Sistine Chapel.
Less obvious spots
The Aventine Keyhole — a view of St Peter's dome framed through a garden gate's keyhole — is a quick, quiet stop most visitors miss entirely.
