The metro
Two main lines, A and B, crossing at Termini — fast, but limited coverage since much of the historic center sits above archaeological layers that make tunneling difficult.
Buses and trams
Fill in the gaps the metro doesn't reach, including most of Trastevere and the historic center. Slower, but far more extensive.
Tickets
A single ticket covers 100 minutes across metro, bus and tram, and must be validated at a machine when you board — inspectors do check, and fines apply for unvalidated tickets.
Walking
Much of central Rome is faster on foot than by bus once you factor in traffic — the historic center is genuinely compact.
