The price–location trade-off
Rome's cheapest accommodation is around Termini and in the Esquilino neighbourhood — well-connected by metro and bus, less atmospheric than the historic center, but often 40–60% cheaper for equivalent quality. The question is whether saving €40 per night is worth 15 minutes extra travel to the Colosseum.
Hostels
A good hostel in Monti or Trastevere can be better placed than a cheap hotel near Termini — and private rooms at hostels now often compete on price. Worthwhile for solo travelers in particular, where the social aspect is a genuine bonus.
Timing
November through February (excluding Christmas and New Year) is when room rates hit their annual low across every category. Booking directly with smaller properties sometimes gets a better rate than booking platforms, particularly for stays of a week or more.
