What to pack for Rome
Cobblestones, church dress codes, and a climate that shifts by season.
Footwear
Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes matter more in Rome than almost anywhere else — cobblestone streets (sampietrini) are uneven and hard on sandals or worn-out soles.
For church visits
Pack at least one outfit that covers shoulders and knees, even in summer — this is enforced at St Peter's and most major basilicas, for all visitors regardless of gender.
By season
Summer: light layers and a hat, the sun is intense with little shade at outdoor sites. Winter: a warm layer and a compact umbrella — rain is common, snow is rare.
