A massive public bathing and social complex built under Emperor Caracalla, once capable of holding over a thousand bathers at a time, with libraries and gardens surrounding the main halls.
Why it's worth the detour
Noticeably quieter than the Colosseum or Forum, with soaring brick walls that still convey the original scale — a good stop for anyone who wants ancient Rome without the crowds.
Getting there
A short walk or metro ride south of the Circus Maximus, easy to combine with a visit there or with Testaccio.
