Why visit
Founded in 1471 — the oldest public museum collection in the world — the Capitoline holds the original bronze Marcus Aurelius equestrian statue, the Capitoline Wolf, and a terrace café with one of the best direct views over the Roman Forum.
The Piazza
Michelangelo redesigned Piazza del Campidoglio in the 16th century, though the final version wasn't completed until the 20th. The oval paving pattern radiating from the central statue base is worth looking down at from the museum steps.
Practical notes
A combined ticket covers both museum buildings. Allow two to three hours — the collections are extensive. The Forum terrace view is accessible with the ticket and is worth prioritizing before the café fills at lunch.
