Why it rivals Pompeii
Ostia was preserved by gradual abandonment rather than volcanic ash, leaving a 2,000-year-old city with intact apartment blocks, a theatre, bathhouses, taverns and mosaic-floored temples — spread across a site you can largely have to yourself.
Getting there
Take the Roma–Lido commuter train from Piramide metro station (line B) to Ostia Antica — about 35 minutes, with regular departures and no separate booking required. The site entrance is a short walk from the station.
How long to allow
A half-day is the minimum; a full day if you want to see the site properly without rushing. Bring water — shade is limited over much of the ruins.
