See & Do

A walk through Trastevere

A self-guided route through Rome's most atmospheric neighborhood.

Where to start

Begin at Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere in the morning, before the crowds arrive — the fountain and 12th-century church facade set the tone for the whole area.

The route

From the piazza, head south along Via della Scala toward Piazza Sant'Egidio, then loop back through the quieter lanes west of Via della Lungaretta. The area thins noticeably just a couple of streets from the main tourist path.

End point

Finish at the top of Gianicolo Hill for the panoramic view over the city — a 15-minute uphill walk from the neighborhood, rewarded with the best free vantage point in Rome.
