Villa Torlonia

Mussolini's private residence — now a park with three museums and almost no visitors.

What it is

A 19th-century villa and grounds northeast of the center, once leased by the Torlonia banking family to Mussolini as his private home (at the rent of one lira per year). Today the grounds are a free public park; the Casino Nobile houses museums including the Museo della Shoah in the bunker beneath the gardens.

The museums

Three separate museums occupy the estate buildings: a 19th-century applied arts collection, a museum of Jewish culture and history (Museo della Shoah), and a small museum dedicated to the liberty-style architecture of the Casina delle Civette (Owl House), worth visiting for the building itself.

Why go

Uncrowded, free gardens, genuinely interesting buildings, and a very specific slice of 20th-century Roman history almost entirely absent from the standard tourist route. Fifteen minutes by metro from the center.
