Ancient (roughly 8th c. BC – 5th c. AD)

Concrete domes, arches and columns — the Pantheon and Colosseum are the clearest reference points, built to project engineering power as much as beauty.

Renaissance & Baroque (15th–18th c.)

Grand facades, dramatic sculpture, and theatrical use of light — Piazza Navona and Trevi Fountain are textbook Baroque, built to impress at a glance.

Fascist-era rationalism (1920s–40s)

Stark, symmetrical, and stripped of ornament — most visible in the EUR district, built for a 1942 world's fair that the war cancelled.
