Ancient art
Roman art borrowed heavily from Greek models but developed its own strengths in portraiture and narrative relief — the column of Trajan tells a continuous story in stone that reads like a cartoon strip spiraling upward.
Renaissance in Rome
Most of what visitors call Renaissance in Rome is actually High Renaissance or Mannerist — Michelangelo's Sistine ceiling (1508–12) sits at the peak of the former, while Raphael's Vatican Rooms are being created at the same moment, by a different hand, in a different style.
Baroque
Bernini shaped Baroque Rome more than any other artist — his work is everywhere from St Peter's colonnade to Piazza Navona to the Galleria Borghese. The hallmarks are movement, drama and the sense that figures are about to step off their pedestals.
