The honest picture
Rome is one of Europe's more challenging cities for wheelchair users and visitors with mobility difficulties — cobblestones are everywhere in the historic center, lifts are absent from many metro stations, and ancient sites involve uneven terrain.
What is accessible
The Vatican Museums have a dedicated accessible route and lift access to the Sistine Chapel. The Colosseum has a lift to the upper levels. Most major museums have been progressively improved. MAXXI, being modern, is fully accessible.
Transport
Low-floor buses cover most routes; not all metro stations have lifts. Taxis are legally required to accept wheelchair users. The Roma Pass includes a list of accessible attractions.
