Budgeting for Rome
What things actually cost, so you can plan realistically.
Daily costs, roughly
A budget traveler can manage on modest daily spending by staying in Esquilino, eating at counter-service spots, and relying on public transport. Mid-range travel roughly doubles that, with a sit-down trattoria dinner and a central hotel. Luxury travel in Rome has no real ceiling.
Where the money goes
Accommodation and paid sights are the two biggest line items — food is comparatively affordable if you eat where locals eat rather than on the main tourist piazzas.
Ways to save
A combined Colosseum-Forum-Palatine ticket costs less than booking separately. Many churches and some viewpoints are free. Tap water from Rome's public fountains (nasoni) is safe and free.
