Day trip to Naples from Rome
Europe's most intense city, an hour south by high-speed train.
Getting there
High-speed Frecciarossa trains run from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale in around 70 minutes, with frequent departures throughout the day — book ahead for the cheapest fares, but day-of tickets are usually available.
What to prioritize
The historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage site) is walkable and dense — Spaccanapoli, the Via San Gregorio Armeno nativity-carvers street, and the National Archaeological Museum (which holds the best Pompeii finds) can all be reached on foot from the station.
Pizza
Naples invented pizza and still does it better than anywhere else — even a very ordinary pizzeria in Naples outperforms most of what Rome offers. L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele is the famous name, but the queue for a margherita or marinara at almost any wood-fired place in the old center is worth it.
