Ostia
Rome's nearest beach, about 30 minutes by train from Piramide metro station on line B. Ostia Lido has a mix of free public beaches and lido beach clubs — the latter rent sun loungers, have showers and bars, and are the more comfortable option in July and August.
Fregene
A posher, pinewood-lined alternative about 45 minutes northwest of Rome, traditionally popular with Romans who want a quieter, cleaner stretch of coast than Ostia.
Sperlonga
A white-washed clifftop village about 1.5 hours south, with clearer water than anything nearer Rome — requires a car or a train change at Fondi-Sperlonga, but worth it for a longer beach day.
