Why churches matter beyond religion
Rome's churches contain more significant art per square metre than any museum system — free Caravaggios, Berninis and Raphaels are sitting in side chapels across the city, requiring nothing more than a covered shoulders and ten minutes of your time.
The unmissable free churches
San Luigi dei Francesi (three Caravaggios, including The Calling of Saint Matthew), Sant'Agostino (one Caravaggio, a Raphael fresco), Santa Maria del Popolo (two Caravaggios, a Chigi Chapel designed by Raphael), Santa Maria sopra Minerva (Michelangelo's Christ Carrying the Cross, Fra Angelico's tomb), and San Pietro in Vincoli (Michelangelo's Moses) — all free, all routinely undervisited.
Practical notes
Dress code applies everywhere — shoulders and knees covered. Most churches close for 2–3 hours around midday. Coin-operated lights illuminate altarpieces in darker interiors — carry €0.50 coins.
