Plan

Rome in 24 hours

One day — the tightest possible edit of the city's essentials.

The strategy

With 24 hours you can do two major things well, or four things badly. The choice comes down to what you'll most regret missing. The Colosseum or the Vatican — pick one as your anchor. The other goes on the list for next time.

Colosseum day

Colosseum at 8am (pre-booked). Roman Forum through the morning. Lunch in Monti. Afternoon walk through the historic center: Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori. Trevi Fountain at dusk. Dinner in Trastevere. Evening walk back through the illuminated city.

Vatican day

Vatican Museums at earliest available slot (pre-booked). St Peter's Basilica before the dome queue builds. Lunch in Prati. Afternoon: Castel Sant'Angelo, then walk across Ponte Sant'Angelo into the historic center. Pantheon, Piazza Navona for aperitivo. Dinner near the Pantheon.
