Daytime temperatures typically range from 5 to 15°C, with rain common from November through January. Snow is rare but not unheard of, and looks extraordinary on ancient ruins when it happens.
Advantages
Significantly smaller crowds at every major sight, shorter or no queues for the Colosseum and Vatican Museums even without advance booking, and hotel prices at their yearly low — often 30–40% cheaper than peak season.
What's open
Almost everything stays open year-round in Rome — unlike beach destinations, the city doesn't have an off-season. Christmas season runs from early December, with markets at Piazza Navona and nativity displays in major churches.
