Official taxis
Only white taxis with a taximeter, roof light and licence number on the door are official. Fares are metered with fixed supplements for luggage, late night, Sundays and public holidays. Fixed fares apply for Fiumicino and Ciampino airports — confirm the flat rate before getting in.
Uber
Uber operates in Rome but primarily uses licensed drivers rather than private individuals (the same restriction applies in most Italian cities). Uber Black and similar premium tiers are available; UberX-style cheap rides are limited. The app works, but expect pricing closer to a taxi than a UK or US Uber.
Avoiding scams
Unofficial touts offering rides at airports and Termini station are a well-known problem — always walk to the official taxi rank rather than accepting offers inside the terminal. The Fiumicino flat rate is fixed by law; anyone quoting substantially more is not an official driver.
