Rome weather month by month

What to expect every month — and exactly what to pack for each season.

January & February

Coldest months: 5–12°C. Rain likely, occasional cold spells, rare snow. Pack: warm coat, waterproof layer, scarf and gloves. Advantage: lowest prices, shortest queues of the year.

March & April

Spring arrives gradually: 10–18°C. Showers still common in March. Pack: light layers, waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes. Note: Easter crowds spike sharply — avoid if dates are flexible.

May & June

Ideal weather: 18–28°C. Light rain in May, hot and dry by June. Pack: t-shirts, light trousers, one long sleeve for evenings. Church cover (shoulders/knees) essential.

July & August

Hot: 25–35°C, peak heat in August. Pack: breathable fabrics, sun hat, sunscreen, comfortable sandals — but closed shoes for major sites. A light scarf doubles as church cover.

September & October

Best weather: 18–26°C in September, cooling to 14–20°C in October. Pack: light layers, one warmer option for October evenings. Perfect walking conditions throughout.

November & December

Cooling and rainy: 8–16°C. Pack: warm layers, compact umbrella, waterproof shoes. Christmas markets from mid-December; quieter than peak season in most of the city.
