Long-term rentals in Rome
Staying a month or more — what to know about the rental market.
The market
Rome's long-term rental market is tight in the historic center and Prati, and considerably more affordable further out — Pigneto, Ostiense and Nomentano all offer genuine neighbourhood character at lower rents than tourist-adjacent areas.
What to expect
Furnished apartments for month-plus stays are common; unfurnished is usually for longer leases of a year or more. Italian lease contracts (contratto di locazione) come in various registered forms — a regular short-term tourist rental without a formal contract is legally grey.
Practical notes
Most landlords expect payment in advance for the full period on shorter stays; a security deposit of one to two months is standard. Utility bills may or may not be included — always clarify.
